Soo Y. Kim



  • Overview


    Soo Kim concentrates her practice on large complex litigation that spans multiple industries and practice groups. She is a member of the firm’s Insurance + Reinsurance Group.

    Insurance Coverage Litigation
    Soo counsels and represents domestic and international insurers in coverage litigation across various product lines including commercial property and casualty, environmental, and professional liability.  Soo has managed all phases of large scale e-discovery for matters in litigation in both state and federal courts and well as arbitrations involving insurance coverage and bad faith disputes.

    Health Law Litigation
    Soo’s practice primarily focuses on defending pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers in mass tort litigation. She has managed the administration of settlements of pharmaceutical mass tort litigation in the United States and Canada. Soo also defends commercial clients in health care and toxic tort litigation.

    Business Litigation
    Soo defends commercial clients in complex litigation at both the state and federal level. She actively manages cases throughout all phases of litigation, including presuit investigation, discovery, and dispositive motions. In addition, she handles insurance coverage disputes. She successfully argued a pre-answer motion to dismiss on behalf of a domestic insurer before a New York state and appellate court. 

    As a strong advocate for her clients, Soo actively seeks to find creative and cost-effective resolutions. Early in her career, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Stephen G. Milliken of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the Honorable J. Ramsey Johnson of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

      • Defended insurer in pre-answer motion to dismiss before New York state and appellate courts. Shipyard Quarters Marina, LLC v. New Hampshire Ins. Co., 143 A.D.3d 565 (1st Dep’t 2016). *

      • Obtained pre-answer dismissal on behalf of generic pharmaceutical manufacturer and individually named officers and directors in breach of contract claim seeking $18.5 million in damages in federal court. *

      • Obtained summary judgment on behalf of nutritionals manufacturer for personal injuries in New York state court. *

      • Represented medical device manufacturers in federal courts involving claims of personal injury. *

      • Represented various pharmaceutical manufacturers in federal and state litigation, including coordinated proceedings and multi-district litigation. *

      • Worked with experts on behalf of pharmaceutical manufacturers regarding various scientific issues including initiation of breast cancer, epidemiology, and metallurgy. *

      • Supported multiple London arbitrations in insurance coverage disputes involving claims of pollution and bodily injury. *

      • Represent London and domestic insurers in coverage action involving claims under professional liability policies arising out of multiple class actions alleging improper closing fees on second mortgage loans.

      • Represent primary and excess insurance companies concerning claims made under pollution and general liability policies involving a gasoline additive.
