Our Energy—Competitive Markets team is a leader in the rapidly-changing competitive energy marketplace. Our lawyers, lobbyists, and analysts assist clients with all aspects of competitive gas and electric energy industries. To ensure your energy company’s success, we integrate our extensive regulatory and legislative experience with a wide range of legal disciplines.

Our Services

Our attorneys have a deep understanding of the business needs of entities operating in the wholesale and retail competitive markets, including independent power producers, retail electric and natural gas suppliers, and renewable, traditional and distributed generation developers.

We assist our clients in obtaining market participant status, and we advise on regional wholesale market rules, including the wholesale electric markets administered by ISO New England. We also serve as regional regulatory counsel to one of the country's largest retail supply trade associations. We represent individual competitive retail suppliers of electricity and natural gas with matters including:

  • Obtaining necessary licenses to provide competitive services
  • Appearing before state regulatory commissions charged with the oversight, development, and design of competitive retail energy markets
  • Counseling suppliers on compliance with marketing standards and consumer protection laws
  • Assisting suppliers with developing, revising, and implementing compliance programs

Our Team

Our Energy—Competitive Markets team assist clients in responding to sophisticated business problems. Each member of our team has a complete understanding of the legal, commercial, and regulatory environments where our competitive energy industry clients operate. Armed with this understanding, we regularly appear before state regulatory commissions to address the specific needs of national, regional, and local energy companies and industry associations, and to advocate for changes in laws and policies on behalf of our clients.

We collaborate with colleagues throughout our firm’s diverse practice groups, including Business Transactions and Construction. We maintain our knowledge of the industry through leadership and active participation in leading trade organizations, such as New England Women in Energy and the Environment and the Northeast Energy and Commerce Association. Our lawyers also regularly publish and present on issues of relevance to the energy industry.
