Bill has litigated patents and other intellectual property rights relating to a wide variety of technologies for more than 25 years. His breadth of experience includes being involved in more than 100 intellectual property lawsuits in federal and state courts, courts of appeal, and before the International Trade Commission.

Bill has drafted well more than 100 patent applications from scratch and prosecuted numerous others in the areas of consumer goods, medical devices, automobile manufacturing, digital imaging technology, and electrical/electronic products manufacturing, among others, for some of the world’s leading companies in those varied industries. His experience includes intellectual property rights, patent appeals, re-examinations, and trademark oppositions and cancellations before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Bill brings his wealth of knowledge of patent prosecution into the litigation arena, identifying the often subtle issues that can determine the ultimate outcome of a case and utilizing his years of litigation experience to draft and prosecute patents that can withstand the scrutiny of litigation.

Bill has been first chair and/or lead counsel in a number of high-profile cases. These include a successful, precedent-setting appeal regarding the interpretation of 28 U.S.C. 1447(c); authoring the first U.S. Supreme Court brief ever filed by the People’s Republic of China in a patent case; serving as lead counsel for the defendant/third party claimant in a patent infringement and antitrust countersuit related to battery-powered smoke detectors; securing a stay of litigation pending outcome of patent reexamination proceedings for multiple broadcasting industry defendants resulting in substantial amendments to the patents and the plaintiff dismissing the suit; and serving as lead counsel for defendants in a patent infringement and unfair competition action related to enclosures for underground utilities resolved after a successful claims construction ruling.
