Robinson+Cole Presents 2025 Awards

On July 22, 2025, Robinson+Cole recognized 14 lawyers and staff for their pro bono work, mentoring, community service, wellbeing efforts, and dedication to promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment as part of the firm’s annual awards. Mentors of the Year Award The 2025 Robinson+Cole Mentors of the Year were Adam Petitt, Kristen Spirou, Eric Rigoli, Sabrina Galli, and Paralegal Nakia Christie. The award highlights their outstanding guidance, support, and encouragement of their fellow lawyers and staff in pursuit of professional growth. Adam, Kristen, Eric, Sabrina, and Nakia are formal and informal mentors committed to being thoughtfully engaged and insightful with their colleagues. Adam is known for modeling excellence in litigation, mentoring those in the Managed Care + ERISA Litigation group that he co-chairs, and for his thoughtful approach to client advocacy and interaction with courts regarding case strategies. Adam’s colleagues credit him for elevating their performance by observing how he handles clients, peers, and the courts; they also commend Adam for always finding time for his mentees and ensuring they have what they need to succeed. Kristen, Eric, and Sabrina’s exceptional mentorship stems from their work in R+C’s Junior Advising Program, where they have demonstrated a special commitment to helping junior associates navigate the firm’s culture and expectations. Each of these three associates has also mentored colleagues in the firm’s other mentorship programs. Kristen’s candid and relatable demeanor helps her connect with junior associates and guide them when it comes to workload management. Kristen was also a 2025 Summer Associate Coordinator, further exemplifying her commitment to guiding junior associates. Eric consistently makes time for meaningful, in-person advising for his advisees, where his impactful guidance and mentorship help junior associates grow and find confidence in the legal profession. Eric was also a 2025 Summer Associate Coordinator, reinforcing his commitment to mentoring junior associates. Sabrina’s consistent availability, support, insight, thoughtful guidance, and above-and-beyond care has helped new associates seamlessly integrate with the firm and feel at home. Nakia’s dedication to her mentees and colleagues consistently allows her to support and teach them the intricacies of complex paralegal work thanks to her deep knowledge and experience. She also leads by example by showcasing her willingness to take on additional work to support the team and the firm. Community Service Award The 2025 Robinson+Cole Community Service Award was presented to Bill Bradley and Legal Administrative Assistant Karen Muldrow for their continued volunteerism. Bill is an active member of the Washington D.C. Police Foundation and plays a key role in strengthening community partnerships through his service. He leads R+C’s Washington D.C. office’s annual Coat and Toy Holiday Drive in collaboration with the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, helping to bring warmth and joy to local families during the holiday season. In addition, Bill also serves on the board of Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence, further demonstrating his commitment to public service and youth education. Karen has been a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST), the largest African-American women’s organization in the world, for 37 years. She serves as chair of its Arts and Letters Committee, and assisted in hosting the 10th Anniversary of the "Delta Authors on Tour" for the Eastern Region, which celebrates 320 Delta Authors' diverse talents across all genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and children’s literature, selling over 584 books (totaling over $11,000 in sales), the highest amount of books sold for the Eastern Region. In addition, Karen's support for DST extends to her participation in mental health webinars; a summit on wealth and health in collaboration with Christian Care Hospital; a diaper drive for young mothers and babies; collecting feminine hygiene products for impoverished individuals to help end period poverty; and raising scholarship funds for DST's annual RedRun 5K Walk/Run at the Riverfront in Wilmington, DE. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion + Belonging Award Keisha Palmer received the firm’s annual Diversity, Equity, Inclusion + Belonging Award for her ongoing dedication to supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts at R+C, in the legal profession, and local communities. Keisha has served on R+C’s DEI+B Committee since 2013 and has also served as the firm’s Hiring Partner since 2020. Her extensive DEI+B efforts extend beyond just the firm and into her local community—she was recently honored by the UConn School of Law Black Law Students Association for her dedication to advancing the academic and professional success of Black law students. Her deep and sustained commitment to fostering excellence and inclusion in the legal profession is also evident in her co-founding of the Summer Law Institute, a program that introduces Hartford region high school students to the practice of law to inspire them to become future lawyers. Pro Bono Award The firm’s Pro Bono Committee recognized Theresa (Tess) Lane, Lauren Elia, and Ryan Hoyler for their dedication and outstanding support of the firm’s pro bono initiatives. Tess and Lauren, under the supervision of Pro Bono Committee chair Seth Orkand, represented William Smallwood, who was convicted of murder in 1977 at the age of 19 and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. A recent Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling allowed defendants between 19 and 21 years old at the time of their crime to be resentenced with the possibility of parole, making Mr. Smallwood eligible for parole after 46 years in prison. Tess and Lauren spent 18 months and over 300 hours preparing William for his hearing, counseling him through numerous sessions to help him unpack the causative factors of his crime. Compounding this matter was the fact that William’s sentence did not provide for rehabilitative resources while he was in prison. Tess and Lauren’s tireless advocacy and counseling at the parole hearing, with Lauren providing opening statements and Tess providing closing statements, Mr. Smallwood was granted parole and was released from prison in July 2025. Their work on this matter reflects a deep commitment to justice and to the power of pro bono advocacy to truly change lives. Ryan represented first-time homeowners with small children in Hartford Superior Court. The case was an appeal of the “just compensation” paid by the Connecticut Department of Transportation to acquire, by eminent domain, part of the client’s property in East Windsor. The result of the taking moved the client’s home closer to a busy state road with heavy traffic, exposing the family to nuisance-like conditions, and eliminating the client’s side yard where their children would play. Ryan masterfully managed the client’s expectations, presenting their case to the court, including post-trial briefing, and dedicated significant time to the case. Separately, Ryan handled a pro bono matter for Camp Courant, the nation’s oldest and largest free summer day camp, where, after multiple public hearing sessions before the town of Farmington Planning and Zoning Commission, Camp Courant obtained a special permit allowing it to lease its property for third-party events, generating additional revenue through corporate retreats, weddings, and other external events. This significant win improved Camp Courant’s financial stability and further supports the wider community and its mission. Wellbeing Award Stephen Aronson, Dana Horton, and Senior Attorney Career Development Manager Drew Collins were recognized as this year’s Wellbeing Awardees, underscoring their unfettered dedication to fostering a mentally and emotionally healthy workplace. Stephen served as co-chair of R+C’s Wellbeing Committee from 2021 – 2025, where he was instrumental in advancing the firm’s wellbeing initiatives. He helped ensure the committee’s work aligned with the goals of the American Bar Association’s Wellbeing Pledge, reinforcing the firm’s commitment to wellbeing. He participated in several ABA Wellbeing Conferences, sharing R+C’s successes with other firms. In addition, he contributed to the Addiction/Stigma/Recovery subcommittee, where he circulated firmwide emails on the importance of monitoring alcohol use during the holidays and provided research and resources for assistance. He also spearheaded a program on Care Giver Planning with external speaker Nancy Sheets. Dana also served as co-chair of R+C’s Wellbeing Committee from 2022-2025, where she played a key role in leading the Physical/Nutritional subcommittee and supported the planning and execution of several firmwide challenges and events. She also assisted with fundraising efforts, encouraging people to join their downtown YMCA’s Mission in Motion Cycle-a-Thon. Additionally, she served on the Parents and Caregivers subcommittee, where she brought in external speaker Scott Driscoll to speak to the firm about internet safety for families. Stephen and Dana’s service on the firm’s Wellbeing Committee has influenced other firm committees to adopt their subcommittee structure, led to various initiatives that have improved the firm’s culture and general wellbeing, and a consistently high ranking in wellbeing in the annual Associate Vault rankings. Drew has been a consistent driving force in R+C’s wellbeing programming over the past several years. He leads the Physical/Nutritional subcommittee and sits on the Intellectual/Creative subcommittee. In addition to championing other people’s ideas, Drew initiates many programs, including sessions on developing a rest ethic and guidance on navigating grief during the holiday season. Drew also spearheads the Annual Summer Fitness Challenge, giving every R+C employee the opportunity to be active and healthy together. In addition, Drew champions wellbeing in the legal industry, where he has presented at several legal wellbeing conferences, including leading a session at the Annual Wellbeing Week in the Law in 2024.
