Black Basta Exploits Microsoft Zero-Day After Patch
It is being reported that Black Basta (aptly named) exploited a Microsoft zero-day prior to Microsoft’s release of a patch for the vulnerability back in March.
The vulnerability, CVE-2024-26169, was on Microsoft’s March update’s Patch Tuesday List. Unpatched, it allows the threat actor to escalate privileges. Read more

On June 17, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced settlements of alleged False Claims Act (FCA) violations associated with cybersecurity requirements in contracts to provide a secure environment for online applications for federal housing assistance. Guidehouse Inc. and Nan McKay and Associates paid $7.6 million and $3.7 million, respectively, to settle the civil claims initially brought by a whistleblower under the FCA’s qui tam provisions. Linn Freedman Among “Women to Know in Health IT 2024”
Data Privacy + Cybersecurity Team chair, Linn Freedman, has been named once again as one of the “Women to Know in Health IT | 2024,” published in the May 30, 2024 edition of Becker’s HOSPITAL REVIEW. Linn is the only practicing lawyer to be listed. This recognition marks the fourth time she’s made the list, having also received it in 2023, 2022, and 2020 (no list was released in 2021). The publication, which provides hospital and health system business and legal news and analysis, reinforces that “women are working to shape and enhance the future of healthcare through health IT,” and acknowledges that they “are modernizing administrative healthcare processes, cutting back on inefficiencies, standardizing workflows, and more.” The 2024 list profiles 141 women nationally. Jim Merrifield Authors iQ Magazine Article Highlighting the Next Frontier in Information Governance
Director of Information Governance + Business Intake, Jim Merrifield, authored an article titled “The Next Frontier for Information Governance Experts,” published in the June 2024 edition of iQ Magazine. Jim’s article highlights the critical role of information governance (IG) in a data-driven world, artificial intelligence’s (AI) place as a dynamic tool in reshaping IG, and the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape of IG and data management. “AI technologies, especially machine learning algorithms and natural processing, are pivotal in streamlining data classification, proactively identifying compliance risks, enforcing policies, and enabling organizations to make more informed decisions,” writes Jim. “The future of data management is smarter and sharper with AI.” Read the article.
Sean Griffin Presents on AI and Implicit Bias at DRI’s Diversity for Success Seminar
Artificial Intelligence Team lawyer Sean Griffin presented a program on “AI and Implicit Bias” as part of DRI’s 2024 DRI Diversity for Success Seminar hosted on June 13, 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee. Sean delved into the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and the subtle biases that can be embedded within its algorithms. The program explored how machine learning models, often trained on historical data, may inadvertently perpetuate, and even amplify societal biases. The discussion emphasized the importance of understanding these implicit biases to ensure responsible AI development and deployment. Additionally, Sean offered potential strategies and ethical considerations to mitigate bias and promote fair and unbiased AI systems.
Kathryn Rattigan and Jim Merrifield Present as Keynote Speakers at Inform24 Conference
Data Privacy + Cybersecurity Team member Kathryn Rattigan and Director of Information Governance + Business Intake Jim Merrifield were the keynote speakers presenting “Cyber Risks: Is Your Data Retention Program Helping or Hurting?” at the Inform24 Conference, hosted by ARMA New Jersey, on June 12, 2024, in Princeton, NJ. In addition, Kathryn was among the panelists that presented a session entitled, “Building the Village: Exploring Compliance, Privacy, and Information Governance,” and Jim presented on a panel in a session entitled, “Navigating the Information Governance Highway: Insights from Successful Information Governance Team Leaders.” The conference gathered records & information management, information governance, security, and privacy experts to discuss innovative business solutions, provide professional development opportunities, and establish networking prospects to help drive the information governance industry forward. Jim serves as the Vice Chair of ARMA International.
