Multi-Million Dollar Coverage Dispute

Obtained summary judgment in favor of insurer in multi-million dollar coverage dispute between commercial liability insurer and builders risk that was upheld on appeal. (2023)

Hotel Damage + Business Losses

Filed declaratory judgment action on behalf of boiler and machinery insurer involving a multimillion-dollar insurance claim for damage to a Miami Beach hotel, and ensuing business losses, arising out of a 2017 electrical arcing event. We filed a motion for summary judgment which led to a partial summary judgment ruling rejecting the Hotel’s arguments to justify claims for significant additional recoveries under the policy – attempted re-calculation of the effect of the co-insurance provision and claimed extension of the period of restoration to include all delays encountered by the Hotel in resuming operations, including those significant delays associated with the permitting process. Shortly thereafter, the coverage action was favorably resolved.

Robinson+Cole Presents 2024 Awards

On July 10, 2024, Robinson+Cole recognized 15 lawyers and staff members for their pro bono work, mentoring, community service, wellbeing efforts, and dedication to promoting a diverse, inclusive work environment as part of the firm's annual awards. Pro Bono Award The firm’s Pro Bono Committee recognized Peter Knight, Raymond Gauvreau, Julie Charpentier, and Taz Islam for their dedication and outstanding support of the firm’s pro bono initiatives. Peter has a long and distinguished history on the firm’s Pro Bono Committee, recently serving as chair. In addition to his leadership of the firm’s pro bono activities, his individual efforts focus on representing children in neglect and abuse cases through the firm’s longstanding relationship with Lawyers for Children America (LFCA). Peter also co-chairs the LFCA’s Advocate’s Network and serves on the board of CT Legal Services. He was recognized for his pro bono service with the Connecticut Bar Association’s Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award. Over the past year, Ray has committed over 200 pro bono hours and has been doggedly leading a court-appointed section 1983 prisoner rights pro bono matter for a client who alleges he was subject to transfer and months of solitary confinement—severely exacerbating his mental illness—to Connecticut’s maximum-security prison because he spoke out publicly about COVID-19 precautions being ignored in prison. Ray’s efforts have led to several depositions, including of the corrections lieutenant, deputy warden, warden, and one of the two deputy commissioners, two mediations, and securing court funding for an expert witness. Julie and Taz have worked together for the past two years, representing two inmates convicted of murder in connection with hearings before the Massachusetts Parole Board. Throughout the matter, Julie and Taz have established a rapport with their clients, helping them gain an understanding of facts and feelings that were repressed for many years, and investigated the clients’ history before they were incarcerated and met with them in prison several times per month to discuss the factors that led to their crimes and their personal growth during their incarceration. Taz also represented one of the clients in a disciplinary hearing involving the client’s alleged participation in a riot and conducted a blistering cross-examination of the corrections officer who wrote the incident report. They will be representing one of the clients at a parole hearing in August in a second attempt for parole after serving 25 years in prison. Diversity Equity + Inclusion Award Ed Heath and Scott Garosshen received the firm’s annual Diversity Equity + Inclusion Award for their ongoing dedication and support of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at R+C, in the legal profession, and local communities as part of the firm’s annual awards ceremony. Ed is a former co-chair of the firm’s DEI+B Committee and has amplified the firm’s internal and external efforts to advance DEI&B. Under his leadership, R+C achieved multiple high rankings for diversity in the Vault 2025 rankings and secured Mansfield Certification Plus after three consecutive years of maintaining Mansfield Rule Certification. Scott has significantly contributed to advancing DEI&B at the firm and in the legal profession. On the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA) Appellate Advocacy Section’s Appellate Diversity Subcommittee, they co-authored a report delivered to the Connecticut Judicial Branch on diversity in the appellate bar in Connecticut and recommended efforts to advance diversity in the appellate bar. Additionally, Scott attends external events for GLAD, co-moderated last year’s R+C Book Club discussion “Gender Queer: A Memoir,” participates in the CBA’s LGBT Section, and will represent the firm at the 2024 Lavender Law Conference in Washington, DC. Community Service Award The 2024 Community Service Award was presented to Laurie Krepto, Sharone Kornman, Senior Business Development Manager Denise Lee, and Providence Office Coordinator Heidi Seddon for their continued volunteerism. Laurie has been an active member of the board of directors for Pennypack Farm & Education Center in Horsham, PA, a non-profit organization that donates 25,000 lbs. of organic produce to area food banks annually, trains future farmers, and educates the community on sustainability issues. She has also been an active member of the board of directors of the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project which provides free legal services to the Philadelphia community. Additionally, she serves as a Mock Trial Coach and was a Girl Scout leader with the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Sharone has an extensive record of laudable community service activities, including founding and serving on the board of directors for the non-profit organization “Voices of Hope,” which serves to educate everyone about the Holocaust and other genocides. She was a former member of the board of directors of her local synagogue. Denise is an active member of her community, volunteering her time fundraising for events, including the Marine Corps Marathon and the breast cancer research organization Seymour Pink. Additionally, Denise is registered with the national bone marrow donor program and is currently working with a patient for whom she is a lifesaving match. Heidi volunteers her time to serve the underserved and marginalized in her community in various ways. In the past year, she spearheaded drives to collect easter baskets and meals, Thanksgiving dinners, and Christmas gifts for residents in Warwick, RI, and is currently working on a committee to support the Aubin Center for Lifespan Hospital in its backpack program, providing items to children who have been suddenly remove from their homes. Mentors of the Year The 2024 Mentors of the Year were Megan Baroni, Raymond Carta, and Senior Information Specialist Katie McGuire.
