R+C Construction Team News

Catherine Maronski joins our group as an associate in the Boston office. Katie’s experience includes a wide array of complex disputes involving design and construction defects, negligence, breaches of contract, professional malpractice, personal injury, and premises liability. She has represented clients in disputes before state and federal courts and provided claim evaluations and risk management advice. Learn more about Katie.


Our Hartford Office Relocation

As of August 12, our new home is located at One State Street in Hartford, Connecticut. We occupy four of the 24-story Hartford Steam Boiler building’s top floors, which offer panoramic views of the city and the Connecticut River. Our new space also features state-of-the-art offices and conferencing abilities, and we look forward to hosting our clients and colleagues soon.

2024 HEREL Annual Conference 

Greg Faulkner will present “Following the Money on a Construction Project – How Do We Define and Track Reimbursable Costs, Fees, Buyouts and Savings through Construction Projects” at the 2024 HEREL Conference, hosted by Florida International University (FIU) on November 7-8. Joe Barra Authors Articles on SJC Prompt Pay Act

In mid-June, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) issued a decision in Business Interiors Floor Covering Business Trust v. Graycor Construction Company, Inc., et al., that addressed some of the unanswered questions regarding the Prompt Pay Act. Joe Barra authored the articles “SJC Prompt Pay Act Decision Is Warning to Developers,” published in Banker & Tradesman on July 15, and “Lawsuit Gives Teeth to Massachusetts Pay Law,” published in ENR on August 7.

Marty Onorato Elected to CBC Board

Construction Law Group Chair Marty Onorato was elected Director & Historian of the Connecticut Building Congress Board at the Connecticut Building Congress Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 11. Robinson+Cole was proud to sponsor the meeting.

  • We are proud to be the lunch sponsor for The Heroes Golf Classic on August 15, supporting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Scoops for Troops.   • We were pleased to support and participate in the AGC MA’s Annual Golf Classic on July 29. The AGC MA is the leading commercial construction association in the Commonwealth and provides members with benefits and business resources for Massachusetts’ building industry. Joe Barra is a former director of AGC MA. 
  • Marty Onorato and Lisa Andrzejewski presented a workshop entitled “Understanding Your Contract,” hosted by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Minority Construction Council on June 20. Marty and Lisa offered insight on how to negotiate a better subcontract that reduces risk and maximizes a contractor’s right to be paid; key contractual pitfalls such as prompt payment, liquidated damages, no damages for delay, and consequential damages clauses; knowing contractor rights in preserving claims; and notice provisions, claims recovery, dispute resolution, payments bonds, and mechanic’s liens.
  • We were pleased to once again support the annual Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut’s golf outing on July 15, supporting the organization’s mission of representing merit shop contractors and advancing the entire construction industry. Frederick Hedberg attended the outing.
  • Greg Faulkner moderated a panel entitled “Design Build’s Impact on the Borough Based Jail Projects” at the Commercial Observer’s 2024 Public Projects Forum on June 18, in New York City. His panelists included Steve Alessio from Sweet Group, Eduardo Del Valle from the NYC Department of Design and Construction, Scott Demel from Marvel, and Joshua Frankel from Hunter Roberts Construction Group. The large-scale event brought together contractors, architects, engineers, legal experts, and project managers to discuss cutting-edge trends, innovative practices, and transformative technologies that will shape the future of the construction industry. Robinson+Cole was also pleased to be a sponsor for the event.
  • During the Connecticut Bar Association’s Connecticut Legal Conference on June 10, Larry Grijalva’s presentation, “Construction Law Year in Review,” discussed recent case laws and significant new legislative developments impacting construction law and what contractors, lawyers, and practitioners should be aware of as the industry continues evolving.
  • We were pleased to once again be a sponsor for the 2024 Mark H. Hasso Project Excellence and Scholarship Awards Program, hosted by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), New England Chapter on June 3. The 30th annual awards ceremony recognized outstanding project teams and their contributions to the industry. Joe Barra, a former board member of both the New England Chapter and the National Construction Management Association of America, has a long-standing commitment to the organization.
  • On May 11, we were pleased to be a sponsor of the 2024 Joseph J. Cassidy Memorial 5K Road Race, Kids’ Run & Family Walk, hosted by the Hartford County Bar Foundation (HCBF), the charitable arm of the Hartford County Bar Association. The race welcomed adults and kids of all ages to run or walk in support of the HCBF’s programs, which benefitted the homeless, hungry, sick, disabled, and other people in need. Frederick Hedberg serves as secretary of the HCBF.
  • The 4th Annual Girl Power Bowl-A-Thon held on May 5 benefitted the Girl Power Collaborative, which supports over 2,000 girls and women through Girls on the Run (GOTR), S.T.E.P.S., Inc., Girl Scouts and Soroptimist CT Shoreline. We were pleased to be a sponsor.
  • Joe Barra moderated a panel at the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts’ (AGC MA) program “Lawyers, Guns & Money: Risk Management from the Field” on April 30. The panel discussed risk management, tolerance to calculated risks, how to effectively manage risk, and how stakeholders perceive risk. Joe is a past director of AGC MA.
  • R+C lawyers attended the WTS Connecticut Chapter’s Annual Awards & Scholarship Banquet on April 18, which recognized women leaders in the CT transportation industry, honored scholarship recipients pursuing careers in transportation, and featured a keynote address by Laura Francis, Deputy Director/Director of Transportation Planning, South Central Regional Council of Governments. Fred Hedberg with Anand Gupta attended the event. Keanna Chang. R+C was pleased to be an annual sponsor of WTS CT. 
  • Hartford County Bar Foundation President Ernie Mattei and Secretary Fred Hedberg delivered a grant to Martha Stone, founding Executive Director of The Center for Children’s Advocacy, New England's largest children’s legal rights organization. The grant will help fund the Center’s Homeless Youth Advocacy Project, which provides legal services to adolescents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and its Mobile Office which travels the community to help resolve legal issues. Fred has served on the Board of Directors of HCBF since January 1, 2021.
